Welcome to the Mark In Time Photography Blog

Welcome to my Blog. I hope to keep you informed of what’s going on in my world. It’s certainly a very varied and exciting life as an Event and Portrait Photographer.

Commercial photoshoot of Carriages

One of the real bonuses of my job is the wide variety of people I meet, places I travel to and things I get to shoot. Different day, different office. Exemplified by my recent commercial photoshoot for a company that hires out horse drawn carriages to the film and television industry. The business was created in 1950 and is still going strong with the likes of Hollywood making use of their services. If it is pulled by a horse they almost certainly have an example or two – Hansom cabs, State carriages, Trams, Field guns, Ambulances, Chariots, Hearses! Every time you watch a period drama their carriages are probably on your screen.

Moving a carriage by hand at a commercial photoshoot by Mark In Time Photography

The biggest challenge I faced was the sheer variety in size and finish of the various carriages, it meant that the lighting had to be adjusted for each and every vehicle. No small task with over 200 carriages to shoot. The brief was to shoot the carriages against a green chromakey backdrop this created its own problems with green spill on any vehicle with a shiny finish needing to be controlled.

It was a strenuous and time consuming task for the staff to manhandle all of the carriages on and off of the set, then giving each a quick spruce up.

I loved the details in the chariots, how best to bring it all out was the challenge. I opted to build a large scrim and fix it in place directly over the chariots. Then careful positioning of 2 lights both on giraffe booms gave me the look and the detail I was looking for.

If your looking to hire carriages for a production you are planning then head on over to

Lightroom Tuition

I recently had the pleasure of meeting members of the Northampton Inspire Camera Club to help them with some Lightroom tuition.

The majority of my Lightroom Workshop days are conducted for working photographers, so a rejig was necessary to make the tuition more relevant to the hobbyist.
It was a busy day with a lot of information to take in and a lot of questions answered. As usual though everyone left buzzing with all of the possibilities that have always been there but have just been out of sight. There is a mountain of information out on the web about Lightroom however there is no substitute to working through it live, together with someone who can show you around.

The great thing for me about Lightroom is the customization available to get Lightroom both looking and working how you want it to work for you. That is what I really hope people get out of the day, how to make the most of Lightroom’s presets and templates to make it work for them.

I conduct these workshops in Northampton but am happy to travel if the costs are met. I like to work with small groups of 3 to 5 people and always have a couple of spare computers for people to use on the day if they do not have their own laptop. My standard Lightroom tuition day in Northampton is £80 per person. I am also available for one to one tuition, please get in touch for a quote for personal 1 to 1 Lightroom tuition.

Firewalk in aid of St.Joseph’s Hospice

A group of 33 fearless firewalkers marched their way over hot coals on Wednesday evening at St Joseph’s Hospice, raising almost £11,500 between them.

It was a perfect evening for the ultimate challenge, with teams from local businesses, people walking in memory of a loved one, St Joseph’s Hospice staff and volunteers walking barefoot on hot embers at a mean temperature of 1236 degrees Fahrenheit. The heat was intense and so was the passion from everyone who took part.

Local Firefighter Joe Jackson based at Bethnal Green fire station said, “So I did a firewalk to raise money for St Joseph's Hospice.  Yes, this meant walking on burning hot coals. As a firefighter I didn't know what to expect or how I was going to physically manage this.  With some intense training the whole team of firewalkers managed the seemingly impossible, overcoming our doubts and fears to successfully raise a healthy amount of money for St Joseph’s.

Book Mark In Time for your Firewalk

Mark In Time Photography was there to capture the brave souls as they traversed the coals and did their firewalk for St.Joseph's.

We specialise in capturing fantastic images of your participants in the challenging conditions presented by shooting a firewalk in the dark, without destroying the magic of the fire.

The images provide a brilliant memento of your participants achievement. They are extremely popular for those taking part and as part of a successful event we are happy to donate back to your good cause from our takings. Images are also available to you FOC for your Social Media, marketing and advertising purposes following the event. Firewalk in aid of The Peace Hospice

Watford was set ablaze by the team from Blaze Firewalking for Thursdays Charity firewalk in aid of the Peace Hospice in Watford. Fortunately the weather was kind to us and remained dry, the freezing temperatures were not noticed once the fire was lit and warmed us all up. The event was very well attended with over 50 participants braving the heat of the firewalk to raise funds. And raise money they did to the tune of £6,600 and Mark In Time Photography contributed from our profits on the night.

Firewalk Safety

Every one of the participants underwent an hours training from the Blaze team prior to the Firewalk. Blaze Firewalking make absolutely sure that all have a fantastic experience and safety is always in the forefront of their mind. While Adam is tenderly building the fire, Karen takes all the participants away for their training which will enable them to complete the challenge. Andy meanwhile will be enertaining the spectators with his Poi and firebreathing skills. something not to be missed.

Raw image imported using Lightroom's default settings

The 2 images of St.Lukes, Church in Duston, Northampton reveal a problem many people experience. The Raw file examined on the camera's LCD looks great. You import into Lightroom and the image looks completely different! What's going on? This is just one of the issues I deal with and it will allow you to reproduce what you see on your LCD in Lightroom, on import, no editing required. Straight away your starting point is much further along saving you valuable time.

I will also deal with colour management in a simple way and explain how to get what you see on your monitor out of your printer FIRST time, saving you pounds on wasted prints.

These are just 2 of the subjects covered. If you have something you are struggling with then let me know when you book and I will ensure you go away with all of the answers you need.

If you don't have a laptop or even Lightroom for that matter, I can supply a laptop loaded with the latest version, for you to use on the day.

More Info

This Lightroom Workshop will improve your editing skills immensely. It will probably be the best training day you do this year so pick up the phone and BOOK NOW 07968533809.

For more about what is included in the day please follow this link to my Training section on the website. Lightroom Training.

Baby Portrait Photography – is it luck or skill?

Baby portrait photography

I love the challenge that photographing babies presents. There are some important considerations such as the time of day, too late and baby is likely to be tired. Temperature, you need a comfortable working temperature to keep baby smiling. Feeding time, if its getting close to feeding time baby might be grumpy. The challenges also vary at the different stages of development. Once they reach the talking stage it gets easy as they quickly relate to my inner child. 🙂

In the studio I love the clean simple white background. There are no distractions its all about the subject. Once baby has settled I think the most important thing is to keep your eye glued to the viewfinder because sod’s law will ensure that if you put that camera down, shot of the session will come and go before you can say Frozen!!!!

There is still time to book a portrait session before Christmas for baby or the whole family. Call Mark on 07968533809 – don’t leave it too long!

A cheeky smile

Isobel was a darling and once comfortable in front of the camera gave me a great selection of expressions my favourite being the cheeky smile. The most satisfying thing with baby, children and kids photography is the little tear in the corner of mum’s eye when she views the final images. It’s a wonderful feeling to know that you have moved somebody with your images.

Conclusion – luck or skill?

So luck or skill? I like to think my childish nature is a real help but as the old saying goes, the more I practise the luckier I get. I’ll take that.

Halloween Fancy Dress Party

Pattishall Halloween Fancy Dress Party.

The organisers did a great job of dressing the hall with spooky accessories. Skeletons and spiders were hung all around the entrance hall. As usual everyone made a great effort with their Halloween costumes. There were ghosts, mummies, vampires, werewolfs and more witches than you could shake a broomstick at. The face painting was very popular.

The disco played all of the favourite Halloween tracks. Michael Jackson’s Thriller and The Monster Mash by Bobby “Boris” Pickett. There were some great party games. My favourite was making a mummy by wrapping people in toilet paper! The huge “Monster” Conga went all round the building.
